The level of danger varies from annoying to life-threatening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Mist from cleaning products<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sanding &#8211; anything<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Painting \u2620\u26a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>To make matters worse, some of the most dangerous contaminants are the ones that you can&#8217;t even see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Filtering facepiece respirators<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Filtering facepiece respirators are disposable masks which are only equipped with a mechanical filter and are completely powerless against gasses \/ chemical vapors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The European EN 149 standard specifies 3 types of masks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><thead><tr><th class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\"><\/th><th class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\">Particulates filtered:<\/th><th class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\">Max inward leakage:<\/th><th class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\">American equivalent:<\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\"><strong>FFP1<\/strong><\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\">&gt;80%<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\">&lt;22%<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\">&#8211;<\/td><\/tr><tr><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\"><strong>FFP2<\/strong><\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\">&gt;94%<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\">&lt;8%<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\">N95<\/td><\/tr><tr><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\"><strong>FFP3<\/strong><\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\">&gt;99%<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\">&lt;2%<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\">N99<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Additional indicators on the mask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>R \u2013 Reusable<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>NR \u2013 Not reusable<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>V \u2013 Equipped with a valve (for easy exhaling)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>D \u2013 Passed optional clogging test using <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dolomite_(mineral)\">dolomite<\/a> dust.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Note:<\/strong> All European masks are resistant to oil. What this means is that smaller or larger particles might get an even better filtration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mechanical filters are powerless against gasses, VOCs, or other vapors.
